I am joining ESTEEM as part of an 8 week internship and I will be taking on the role of Wellbeing Outdoor Activities Assistant. My first week was only an induction but I already feel like I have learnt so much and I have had a chance to meet some of the lovely people that make ESTEEM what it is. I am looking forward to expanding my skills and learning how to promote well-being to young people as this will be very valuable for my degree in psychology.
My first day at ESTEEM. Cat, the CO, has been so friendly and welcoming and this has really made me feel at ease with joining the team. There is a lot to take in, but I am looking forward to learning more and helping others take part in activities. I have been familiarising myself with the different google documents and thinking of ideas for activities and ways to include young adults.
During my second day at ESTEEM I have been going over policies and procedures as part of my training. Cat also took me through the individual risk assessment and shared some useful contacts, leading me to contact the chair for The Brighton Explorers Club in order to plan a meeting in which we can discuss progressing our partnership. I have also been learning about the John Muir Award which could be a good way of getting young adults to engage in more outdoor activities which are great for well-being. Finally, I contacted the Happy Valley Equestrian Centre for more information about getting involved with volunteering/helping with the horses and the possibility of a small group hack. Spending time with animals promotes well-being and reduces depression and anxiety so I think this would be a great activity.
It is now my third day at ESTEEM and I am getting more used to using google docs and Connor taught me the basics of Canva which is regularly used at ESTEEM. I will be making a poster to introduce myself to the young adults at ESTEEM and hopefully get them interested in taking part in the activities I will be offering. I also took part in the drop-in which is every Wednesday evening 6-8pm. This was a lovely way to meet some of the young adults at ESTEEM and I got to chat to them and run some ideas by them. I received a very positive response and it made me feel even more welcome. The drop-in activity was also very enjoyable – we had the choice to paint/draw and the theme was “The view from your window”. The pieces of art we made will be displayed at the old schoolhouse.
My fourth day at ESTEEM! The week has really flown by and today I had a meeting with Cat about putting some activities in place. I have a lot of ideas and I really want to make sure there is something for everyone. It is a bit tricky due to COVID-19 restrictions, but we decided that I could run two online activities in the coming week and then we could host small group activities at the old schoolhouse. I am also contacting other organizations to try and arrange exciting activities but again, COVID affects what we can do. I also joined a Youth Management Team meeting today and it was lovely to meet more of the people involved in ESTEEM. I look forward to meeting people in person in the coming weeks.
My induction week at ESTEEM is coming to an end and I have really enjoyed it so far. It has been a very different experience joining the team during these circumstances but the whole team made me feel very welcome despite the fact we have been unable to meet in person. This morning I had another zoom meeting and I was able to meet a couple more staff and discuss some future ideas for ESTEEM. Everyone is so proactive and caring and I am excited to be part of this team for the next couple of months.
